The Drayton Harbor Music Camp will offer an opportunity for young instrumentalists to learn to play New Orleans style Traditional Jazz (also called Hot Jazz) as an elective class. Students who are learning to improvise will find no better place to start than with "Trad Jazz”, as the music is easier due to less complicated chord changes to improvise on. Solo opportunities are more frequent in Trad Jazz. Unlike big bands, in Trad, every player in the band is often an improvisor on every song. Experienced Trad Jazz players and staff are there to teach, guide, assist and inspire interested young talent. The music itself is the most fun to play as it is so rich in melody, harmony and most important, history. Hot, Trad Jazz of the early 20th century is the origin of all modern forms of jazz, and is still delighting people all over the world through jazz festivals, Trad Jazz Clubs and the Swing Dance Revival. We’re looking for students who are interested in keeping Trad Jazz alive in the U.S.A. and around the world. Traditional Jazz Societies in Washington, B.C. and Oregon have funds for scholarships to students with a genuine interest in playing this form of jazz.
